Thank you to the 700 residents who took the time to answer the survey questions.  The results are being compiled and will be posted soon.

Your input is desperately needed.

The following survey is being sponsored by the Cape Story by the Sea Civic Association (CSBTS), Cape Henry Shores Civic Association (CHSCA)and Shore Drive Community Coalition (SDCC). The survey will be used to help determine the effectiveness of the temporary speed limit reduction from 45 mph to 35 mph along Shore Drive between Great Neck Road and First Landing State Park.

Local residents and civic leagues have repeatedly requested the City over the past 5 years to reduce the speed on this stretch of road. The reduced speed will help improve safety for the 800 residents of Cape Story by the Sea and Cape Henry Shores that cross Shore Drive on foot and by vehicle without the aid of signalized intersections or marked crosswalks. A reduced speed limit will also make the road safer for Type-A bicyclists that voted this roadway as their number one most traveled route in Virginia Beach (Virginia Beach Bikes and Trails Plan 2004) by a 2 to 1 margin over the second most popular route in the City.

Click here to fill out the survey.  It only takes a minute or two to fill out.

The speed limit between N. Great Neck Rd and First Landing State Park will be lowered from 45 mph to 35 mph starting Monday August 3rd on a trial basis. A reduced speed limit will also make the road safer for Type-A bicyclists that voted this roadway as their number one most traveled route in Virginia Beach (Virginia Beach Bikes and Trails Plan).

CITIZENS ENCOURAGED TO TURN IN ILLEGAL FIREWORKS ON JUNE 27th

Every year adults and children are seriously injured and fires ignited by people setting off fireworks across the city. In a joint effort to promote safety this Fourth of July holiday, the Virginia Beach Police Department and Virginia Beach Fire Marshal’s Office are encouraging citizens to voluntarily turn in illegal fireworks.

Citizens may dispose of unlawful fireworks without the worry of repercussion by turning fireworks over to Officers or Fire Marshal staff on Saturday, June 27, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Third Police Precinct, located at 926 Independence Boulevard (behind Bayside Library) and the Fourth Police Precinct at 840 Kempsville Road. Citizens will not be asked, or required, to provide their names or any personal information.

Virginia Beach Police officers will accept any type of fireworks that citizens want to dispose of in a safe manner.  It is in the best interest of public safety to ensure that such items are disposed of properly and do not end up in the hands of children who may be permanently injured by handling them.

Citizens unable to attend the event on June 27 are reminded that fireworks can be turned in for disposal at any of the four police precincts.  The precinct locations are as follows:

  •  First Precinct – 2509 Princess Anne Road – 385-4377
  • Second Precinct – 820 Virginia Beach Boulevard –  385-2700
  • Third Precinct –  926 Independence Boulevard – 385-2703
  • Fourth Precinct – 840 Kempsville Road – 385-2800

For further information regarding this public safety event, please contact Sgt. T. McLaughlin of the Virginia Beach Police Crime Prevention Unit at 385-1006, or Fire Marshal, Battalion Chief Richard C. Kephart, at 385-4228.

If interested in researching the city code:

Sec. 12-43.2.  Fireworks and pyrotechnic displays unlawful

Violation of any provision of this section shall constitute a Class 1 misdemeanor.

The city of Virginia Beach will host the annual Fourth of July Holiday Fireworks Display on July 4 at Mount Trashmore and at the oceanfront along the boardwalk. Logon to www.VBgov.com for more details.

CSBTS July 4 Events

Cape Story’s 46th Annual 4th of July

Parade/Brunch & Fireworks!!!

Saturday July 4th
(Rain Date Sunday July 5th)
Parade 10am – Noon @ Cape Story Neighborhood & Park
Fireworks – 9:20pm @ Cape Story Beach

This year’s parade and brunch will take place from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm (noon) on Saturday July 4th.  The parade route will start on Beech at the bike path, proceed down Beech to Poinciana, follow Poinciana to Bayberry, turn left on Bayberry and end in the neighborhood park. All bike riders, floats and marchers need to line up for the parade between 9:30am – 9:45am.  Please be careful spilling out onto Shore Drive.  If you have to, line your float up in Bloom’s parking lot and we will work you into the parade as it starts moving.

This year’s parade theme, determined by votes at the Spring Fling, is “The American Revolution”. Awards will be given for Most Original, Most Patriotic and Best Theme. Bribing the judges is greatly encouraged!  The parade will be followed by a brunch in the park. There will also be biscuits, doughnuts, fruit and patriotic tunes performed by the “Acoustaholics”.  As she has done in years past, an ice cream truck will also be provided courtesy of LYNN HUME, RE/MAX Allegiance.

Dear Shore Drive Neighbors,
First off, I want to give a huge THANK YOU to everyone that donated to last years show. The support of our community never ceases to amaze me. The plea for additional funds was heard by many residents and allowed our budget to get back on track. As a result, this year’s show will be bigger and better and promises to take your mind off the nation’s economic troubles. Well, at least for the weekend.
Contributions should be made payable to “CSBTS” or “Cape Story by the Sea Civic Association” and mailed to “Fireworks on the Bay”, P.O. Box 700, Virginia Beach, VA 23451.

The annual fireworks show will once again be presented by Zambelli Fireworks Internationale. The display will consist of over 700 shells and will be launched around 9:20 pm on Saturday July 4th from the beach at First Landing State park. The rain date will be Sunday July 5th at the same time. Storage, handling, use of fireworks without a permit from the Fire Marshal’s Office is a violation of City ordinance 12-43.2 and is a Class 1 Misdemeanor. Class 1 Misdemeanors are punishable by up to a $2500 fine and/or 12 months in jail.

Volunteers are still needed for all of the 4th of July events.
” Brunch set-up, Brunch Clean-up, Brunch servers – Please Arrive at the park at 9:45am to help.
” Fireworks set-up and clean-up – Trucks and movers are asked to arrive at First Landing at 1:00pm.
” Trucks and movers are desperately needed for the fireworks.  Last year we had a great group of people to support this event and it ran very smoothly.  Let’s do it again this year.  It is only about an hour worth of time, so please help.  Please contact Todd Solomon at 667-8533 or todd@sdcc.info

For many years, Shore Drive residents, civic leagues and merchants alike have enjoyed this great local tradition. This year’s show will be launched from the same beach location (northwest corner of
First Landing State Park). The show will take place the evening of July 4th at approximately 9:20pm with a rain date of July 5th.
The cost for this year’s entire event including fireworks, security, mailing and permits will amount to $13,000. Unlike City sponsored shows, our “Fireworks on the Bay” display is completely funded by
the local community (residents, civic leagues, merchants). Shore Drive Locals have provided much appreciated support in years past. So once again, Cape Story by the Sea Civic Association is reaching out to all of our neighbors for any financial support possible.
As always, there will be no Cape Story sponsored publicity for this event except a “Thank you” advertisement placed in the Beacon after the event.
Volunteers for an hour of set-up/clean-up and volunteers with trucks are desperately needed. If you would like to help or have additional comments, I can be reached at 667-8533, todd@sdcc.info or the
below address. Comments (good and bad) are encouraged.
Thank you for taking the time to consider this request and for contributing to a celebration that is enjoyed by so many locals.

Thanks for your generosity,
Todd R. Solomon
Co-Event Chairman for Fireworks on the Bay.

Warning: State regulations prohibit launching personal fireworks.
